The historical loss of Saiga abundance from vast areas of the Eurasian steppe has measurably altered plant community composition, reduced nutrient cycling, and diminished the food subsidy available to the predator and scavenger communities that depend on them.
The Saiga's catastrophic decline from over one million individuals in the 1970s to the critically small populations of the early 2000s was primarily driven by a single event — the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. This had simultaneously eliminated the anti-poaching enforcement infrastructure that had maintained Saiga populations across Kazakhstan and Russia, opened international trade routes that connected Saiga horn to Asian medicine markets, and created extreme economic desperation in rural steppe communities that made poaching an economically rational survival strategy for many people.
The resulting poaching surge — targeting males almost exclusively for their horns — was devastating not only in terms of absolute numbers killed but in its destruction of the adult sex ratio, reducing the proportion of adult males in some populations to levels at which effective reproduction became impossible regardless of female numbers. The 2015 die-off demonstrated with terrifying clarity how quickly a recovering population can be eliminated by a pathogen operating under the right environmental conditions. Climate change is directly implicated in driving the environmental conditions that triggered the 2015 event and similar smaller die-offs, as warming and increased humidity during the calving period on the Kazakh steppe appear to be the key environmental triggers for the transformation of Pasteurella multocida from commensal to lethal.
The concentration of a large proportion of the global population into a single recovering subpopulation — the Betpak-Dala population of Kazakhstan — creates an extreme vulnerability to localized catastrophic events that a more distributed population would be better able to absorb. Infrastructure development — roads, pipelines, railways, and agricultural fencing across the steppe — fragments migration routes and prevents the nomadic movements that allow Saigas to track the shifting availability of food and water across the landscape.
