It is the world's heaviest parrot by a considerable margin, the only flightless parrot, the only nocturnal parrot, and one of the longest-lived birds on the planet. Every aspect of the Kākāpō's biology reflects a long evolutionary history in the absence of mammalian predators — a history that rendered it supremely well adapted to the ancient forests of New Zealand and catastrophically vulnerable to the predators that arrived with human settlement.

The Kākāpō has a distinctly owl-like facial disc of fine, pale feathers surrounding large, forward-facing eyes — an adaptation for low-light vision that gives it an immediately endearing and distinctive appearance. Its plumage is a rich, finely barred and mottled mosaic of yellow-green, brown, and black that provides extraordinarily effective camouflage against the forest floor and mossy vegetation of its island habitat. Its wings are relatively large but lack the musculature for powered flight — they are used instead for balance, braking during descents from trees, and display.

The Kākāpō is one of very few parrots — and one of very few birds of any kind — to use a lek breeding system, in which males congregate at traditional display sites and compete for female attention through elaborate vocal and physical displays rather than forming pair bonds or defending food resources. Males spend months each breeding season at their individual bowl-shaped display arenas, booming through the night to attract females who may travel several kilometres to assess and select a mate.
Beyond the lek, Kākāpō are solitary creatures with large individual home ranges that they navigate nightly along well-worn trails through the forest undergrowth, guided by an excellent sense of smell and an intimate knowledge of their territory built up over decades.

In a mast year — when rimu trees fruit prolifically and food is abundant — females that are in good body condition will breed. The female alone incubates the eggs and raises the chicks entirely without male assistance, leaving the nest each night to forage and returning to incubate. This nightly absence leaves eggs and chicks vulnerable to predation — a risk that was negligible in pre-human New Zealand but has become one of the primary management challenges on the sanctuary islands, where stoats and rats can occasionally breach biosecurity.
Chicks are dependent on the female for several months after fledging, during which time she must maintain both her own condition and the growing demands of the chick. The Kākāpō was historically one of the most ecologically significant birds in New Zealand's forest ecosystems, and its absence from mainland New Zealand continues to leave an ecological void that has not been filled by any other species. As a large-bodied herbivore feeding on a wide variety of native plants, the Kākāpō played an important role in seed dispersal — large seeds passed intact through its digestive system — and in the pollination of native flowering plants, particularly through its extensive feeding on pollen. Its intensive feeding on rimu and other podocarp fruits made it a significant agent in the dispersal and regeneration of these ecologically dominant trees.

The Kākāpō's catastrophic decline — from a species that was once abundant across all of New Zealand to a total world population of 325 intensively managed individuals — is the direct result of human-introduced mammalian predators against which the bird evolved no defenses. In the absence of land mammals during New Zealand's long evolutionary isolation, the Kākāpō developed a suite of traits — flightlessness, nocturnality, reliance on camouflage, slow reproduction — that were perfectly suited to a predator-free environment and catastrophically ill-suited to one containing rats, stoats, and cats.
Polynesian settlement introduced rats and the Polynesian dog, which caused the first wave of Kākāpō decline across much of the North Island. European settlement compounded this devastation by introducing stoats, additional rat species, and cats — all highly efficient predators of ground-nesting and slow-moving birds — across both main islands.
By the 1970s the species was believed by many to be functionally extinct on the South Island, surviving only in a small remnant population in Fiordland and a somewhat larger population discovered on predator-free Stewart Island / Rakiura in 1977. Even the Stewart Island population was not safe — cats were present and preying heavily on birds — and the decision to transfer the entire remaining population to predator-free offshore islands was one of the most consequential and ultimately successful emergency conservation interventions in New Zealand's history. Today the threats have not fundamentally changed — the Kākāpō remains entirely dependent on the integrity of its island sanctuaries and the continuous, active exclusion of mammalian predators from those islands.
A single biosecurity breach — a pregnant rat or a stoat reaching a sanctuary island — could devastate a population that numbers in the hundreds. Climate change introduces additional uncertainty by potentially altering the frequency and intensity of rimu mast events on which breeding depends, and by increasing the risk of severe weather events on the small islands that serve as the species' entire world. The small total population size means that disease outbreaks, genetic bottleneck effects, and random demographic events carry population-level risks that simply do not exist for species with larger and more distributed populations.
