Habituation to human feeding — well-intentioned but deeply harmful — makes birds dangerously comfortable around humans and reduces their wariness near roads and residential areas. The small size and geographic isolation of the Australian population means that local catastrophic events — a severe cyclone, a disease outbreak, or a period of intensive road mortality — could have population-level consequences from which recovery would be extremely slow.
